May. 10th, 2008 10:39 amFound myself watching On The Beach last night. Made in 1959, set in 1964 after a nuclear exchange between the US and the USSR. The story is set in Melbourne, Australia as the last bit of human civilization is waiting for the fallout from the nuclear strikes to arrive in Australia.
Very dark. The government in Australia had arranged for suicide pills to be provided for the populace in the event of radiation sickness. In the end, there was no one left. The final scene is an empty city where people had once lived.
kyburg's sister saw it when she was in high school and it caused her nightmares. I remember that era very well, we weren't sure that humanity would survive to see the year 2000. The moral then is still true today: If you fight a nuclear war - Everybody dies.
Going to try and see Iron Man later today.
