[livejournal.com profile] kyburg and I drove up to San Jose to meet up with friends both old and new at BayCon. To make the trip affordable and to spare our own Escort, we rented a Toyota Prius, a gas-electric hybrid. The car totally rocked!

The drive up was fairly uneventful. Traffic was heavy as one would expect from the Memorial Day weekend. Still, [livejournal.com profile] kyburg insisted we get on the road as close to 7 AM as humanly possible. We were out the door at about 7:20. So off we went to Krispy Kreme for some donuts after a brief side trip to the bank.

Let me tell you, do NOT under any circumstances try and get ordinary, plain cake donuts from these guys. The closest you will get it their normal donuts without any icing... Truly vile, that sugary coating is hiding a multitude of sins.

Up in San Jose, we met up with [livejournal.com profile] silverkun and [livejournal.com profile] ceolyn who were running the game room. Donna and I both had bought evening passes so we were able to play games and visit for a few hours.

Sunday we met up with Joseph Palmer. Donna gets the feed from his web blog and he is known for his Ranma 1/2 fan fics. A very good writer and a nice person to meet with and spend part of the day with. We roamed around San Jose including SJ's J-town so we really didn't need to go into the dealer's rooms at either BayCon or Fanime.

Monday was checkout, breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] silverkun and [livejournal.com profile] ceolyn. Then we were off for the drive home. This is when we found ALL of the traffic.

There was bumper to bumper traffic on CA 152 from Gilroy all the way to the junction with CA 156. The traffic on the 5 was squirrelly in spots, usually where people were afraid to pass the semis, until it all came to a crashing halt at the Grapevine. There was traffic backed up at Magic Mountain and it was backing things up halfway to Bakersfield. Ugh! It didn't let up until we were up to the 210.

We made it to the 405 and were almost home when I decided to exit the car pool lane. I signalled, checked to make sure I was clear and began to move over. I just saw in time the morons in the pickup truck who were doing 100+ and decided they had to get into the car pool lane ahead of me. We nearly collided save for some fast evasive moves by myself. Thankfully the Prius handles extremely well. The morons who nearly slammed into me came up beside us and flipped us off. Fucktards! They would have been at fault! Grrrr!!! Where's Voltron when you really need him?

Anyways, as I said, the car was superb. You wanna go 100? It'll do it. We averaged about 80 on the way up and still averaged 40 miles per gallon. LA to San Jose, 1 tank of gas and plenty to get around on before a refill is needed. As such, we have bought only 2 tanks of gas this weekend. We take it back tomorrow, but Donna wants to show the gang at work.

Now, tired. Going to bed soon. Also, go Lakers. They eliminated the Timberwolves tonight to go to the NBA finals.
