Pope John Paul II died... I remember seeing him in St. Louis in 1999, he passed by me in the Cervantes Convention Center where I attended the Papal Mass. I had volunteered to help move people to the TWA Dome for the event and was up at 4:30 am to get there on time. We moved 140,000 people into downtown St. Louis in under 3 hours.

I and the rest of the volunteers were seated in the convention center where they had projection TVs set up. Still, the pope had a surprise for us in the 'cheap seats', he drove in the Popemobile. I was maybe 10-15 feet away when he drove by and I actually made eye contact with him.

Talk about a Deer in the Headlights moment. My thoughts went like this:

I'm holding a camera and had been clicking away as he drove up, (got some decent pictures too!) and working to advance my film. (Boy would I have paid money for a digital camera right then!)

Oh shit, it's the Pope! Do something, you idiot!

So what do I do? I wave shyly and go, "Hi!" :)

*snort*

Rest in peace, Karol. You did good!

Hey, at least you got to say that much. I just stood there dumbfounded when I saw him, but his eyes were closed, and he was blessing all of us, I too got some decent pix (although it was on a more instant camera). We should swap pix.
