Update from Hawaii... Part 2
Nov. 5th, 2002 08:43 pmFirst, thanks to all for the kind words and thoughts about my Grandmother. The best part of Live Journal has always been the people.
Now for the sordid details...
Sunday,
kyburg and I went out snorkeling at the Place of Refuge. This place is beautiful with lots of fish, coral, sea turtles and stuff...
However... It is most certainly not for the beginner and Donna and I both qualify as that. We've never snorkeled and so Donna sliced her leg open on some sharp rocks while I tried very hard to drown myself. (Donna's cut was only about 3/4 of an inch but it was deep. Me, well I never could back down from a challenge... And they said it would be soooo easy... BLARGH!!!) On the plus side, we did get to check out the hospital in Kona and the staff was very nice.
Monday, I took an aerial tour of the island including a trip over a vent from the Kilauea volcano. I got to see lava flowing from a lava tube into the ocean and then we flew up to the vent itself and got to look in... Glad we didn't have a problem, that place looked HOT!!!
Donna has taken 3 of these flights so she opted out.
Today, took a trip to the Waipio Valley. This was the place where the island was ruled until Hawaii was conquered by Kamehameha. (Yes, this was a real guy, not just made up by the DBZ folks...) He moved the capital to Kona. Then we stopped off in the towns along the way for some shopping. Lot's of interesting stuff and I'm telling you, its a good thing I like Macadamia Nuts... ^^
Went back to Place of Refuge. Don't worry, I took back the snorkeling stuff back on Sunday. Instead, Donna and I took a lei for my Grandmother. I took the lei apart and tossed the flowers into the ocean one at a time. I found a nice purple one and I think she would have liked it... By the time we left, the flowers were working their way out to sea...
*sigh*
Tomorrow, finish up the souvenir shopping and get laundry done for the trip home Thursday...
