All good thoughts and prayers welcome.
Apr. 29th, 2009 08:27 pmThis has been coming for some time, so it really did not come as a surprise. My mother told me today that they are putting my grandfather on hospice care. They've delivered a hospital bed to his home in Clinton and he'll be back home tomorrow for as long as he has left.
My mother is already there along with my aunt Dollena and my uncles. (My mom was the oldest of 8, you see...) One uncle is a LVN and my mom is a retired RN so there is no shortage of good help to be had and the hospice team I imagine will be the one who helped care for my grandmother in her final days.
Aside of my Aunt Roxie (my grandmother's younger sister), my mother is now the oldest in the family. I'm sure this is going to be a tough time for her and my family, but we've known this was due for some time. My grandfather, Elmer Hawkins, will turn 97 in June. Whether or not he'll make that birthday is anyone's guess but I'd doubt it. Still, 96 years and 11 months is a pretty good run by anyone's measure. He'll be missed, but his passing will not be the sudden shock like when my grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
I'll be looking at airfares for me to head back east to Tennessee in the near future. I'm guessing it will be in a few weeks. Here's hoping Southwest has some good fares available. Donna will likely stay here with Xander seeing as she has to be at work and he's only been home for slightly more than a month. That whole thing back east will be a bit much for him right now. Me being gone for several days is likely going to be hard enough.
*shakes head*
Good and bad, life and death, people coming into your life and those leaving it... All has it's balance, I suppose, even if we don't always see it.
*sigh*
In other news, Xander has several new words in his arsenal. Today I heard 'ukelele', 'banana', and for the first time him speaking in a sentence about something happening: 'mama home'. He fell asleep on my lap without hardly any struggle tonight. I love that little guy. It is going to be several interesting years to come in my life I can see.
