Anime Expo Plus one week...
Jul. 13th, 2008 08:50 pmWell, we both survived Anime Expo '08. I was pleasantly surprised about the LA Convention Center. It is roomy and has a lot of room for a great deal of 'Con activities. There was even a food court on site where you could get (overpriced) pizza and hamburgers and shtuff. Of course, the down side of this was it began to shut down at about 5:30 pm (ie. they quit making food) and closed the doors promptly at 6 pm when people are thinking about dinner.
The security was just about right. They were present without being overbearing. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of weapons on the con floor despite the rules to the contrary. Sorry folks, you just cannot peace bond a bokken without the use of a hot glue gun. Ton-fa and related martial arts weapons are in the same category. Please keep this in mind for the future.
We spent most of the time in the karaoke room with
catsonmars and the karaoke crew. As usual, there were very good singers, okay singers, and of course the 'take that f-ing mike away from this twit as soon as possible' singers. Overall, it was a lot of fun, I just wish I could have spent some time out there on Sunday to help wrap things up and stuff instead of working my butt off at the hospital (2 Small Bowel Follow Through and an ERCP all at the same time. And short staffed. EGAD!)
Lessee, the parking facilities at the LA Convention Center were nothing less than spectacular. More than enough parking to accommodate the hordes of people/fanboys/cos-players who descend upon Anime Expo every year. Clean, well lit, and with easy access into the Convention Center. One downside, if you leave after about 8 pm, you are out for the night. As such, Donna and I missed the Gong Show on Saturday night. Bummer.
Next year, a lot of the construction in the area will be complete and there should be more options for off site food available for attendees. (Yes, we snuck food in for the Karaoke gang and we're not sorry we did it! MWAAA!) Also, now that the LACC has an idea what to expect, hopefully there can be adjustments to the contract for future cons.
My grade: B- Not too bad, definitely not the near disaster that was Long Beach last year.
Today's highlight: Trying to get an abdominal x-ray on a 700 lbs patient. And yes, we did shut down the room from overheating the tube. (125 kVp @ 690 mAs, if you understand x-ray, you'll understand.)
Well, off to take care of e-mail and then maybe some Civ 4. (Note to self, Katamari is EVIL!!!)
