Iva Robena Hawkins

1924-2002
Beloved Sister, Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother

*sigh*

We all knew it was coming... We knew since April it was coming... But when the day actually arrived, no one was completely prepared.

My mother is devastated as is her sisters and brothers. My Uncle Junior, the oldest, he's being what I always expected - A rock. Strong, solid, unchanging...

It still hurts... I won't be able to get to the funeral. I'm still in Hawaii and the service is on Tuesday. You just never expect to be 'stuck' in Hawaii, but there it is... My heart will be in Tenessee, even if I'm here.

I'm told that having her around for 38 years is something remarkable... But I'm greedy, I admit it... I wanted her around a few more years. I wanted her to see the children Donna and I have... I wanted her to see so much...

She was surrounded by her family. She had 8 childeren in all, 4 boys - 4 girls... The youngest are my age... I can only imagine how hard this is hitting them.

[Addition - Had to move to new computer...]

We're all going to miss her dearly. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] kitty_minako & [livejournal.com profile] ceolyn. This is going to be with me for a while. Thank you for your friendship and support.

She was a neat lady. She loved to play Scrabble with her daughters and any other suckers she could pull into a game. Something of a shark, she was, although she'd deny it. "Angela and Dollena are so much better than your old Granny..." ^^

She graduated from High School only a few years ago. She was so proud to get her diploma on the same stage as one of her grandchildren.

Because of her lack of education, both of my grandparents had a small role in the Manhattan Project. Okay, they were only the people who cleaned the offices at Oak Ridge, Tennessee... But they knew it was there.

And of course, she'd never let you walk away hungry. "Are you SURE you had enough to eat?" My brothers and I usually rolled away from Thanksgiving dinner... ^^

Aloha, Granny. I love you so much.

I am so sorry for your loss Jim. Your Grandmother sounds like she was a very lucky and blessed woman to have such a loving family to care for her. I cannot imagine what a blow this must be. You and your family are in my thoughts.

As strange as it sounds, I'm pretty much okay... The biggest thing is not being able to get to Tennessee for the funeral today. But that was beyond my control.

It's okay. I know she's not in pain any more.

My condolences. Remember that she is no longer bound by time or space and you can say your goodbyes from anywhere.

Thank you!
