Thanks for the mem'ries...
Jul. 28th, 2003 07:34 amBob Hope died today. He was definitely one of a kind...
In 1941, he began visiting U.S. troops. In 1948, Hope held a Christmas show for the troops -- the first of many. By 1953, he'd performed before nearly 1 million servicemen at some 400 camps, naval stations and military hospitals around the world.
I'm old enough to remember those shows, at least the ones in Vietnam. When people were calling the Vets coming home from that hellhole just about every name in the book (and making some new ones up), there was old Bob on stage in a jungle somewhere bringing a small piece of home to the troops. I'm certain that the Vietnam and Korean vets are thinking about Bob today.
It wasn't for political reasons he did this. It was for the men and women serving our country. Had he been able, I'm sure he would have went to Iraq to entertain the troops. Even if he didn't agree with the reasons we were there.
kyburg and I were talking about which entertainer(s) could hold a candle to Bob's reputation as an entertainer. (He'd been working since 1933 till he retired in 1993... do the math) Britney, Justin, M&M (<-- intentional)... These guys just pale in contrast to all that old Bob accomplished in his life.
Not everybody liked Bob Hope... But just about everybody respected him as a comedian, an actor and as a human being.
But I'm certain that Bing Crosby is with Bob now saying something like, "Y'know, Bob... You never did know when to say goodnight..."
And Bob would come back with, "I know, Bing. But that's always been Delores' job..."
We thank you, so much.
