I don't know who she is, but I know [livejournal.com profile] kyburg has been using it for a long fucking time.

In my home country, we have a word for people like [livejournal.com profile] seifergrrl.

"Dumbass."

Talk about needing a fucking LIFE? Got an Icon you DON'T want stolen on LJ?

DON'T use it... Good Lord.

Nytshaed, using an Icon Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] kyburg, flagrantly.

I see the Storm Trooper Loser icon A LOT; but, the first time I saw it was with [livejournal.com profile] drunkenatheist a long time ago on her previous lj. I wouldn't run about accusing people of stealing that icon from her and I'd be annoyed if someone - lets say you since you use the icon, too - accused her of stealing the icon... even if you took 5 minutes to make the Storm Trooper purple. I think the only person who would have any right to get upset would be George Lucas and his legion of Copyright attorneys and their paralegals - and even then it's doubtful there's much action to be taken since no profit is made by the use of that icon.

So, what's the deal? It's an icon. I see neither fuss nor muss in people throwing such a fit - by accussing someone of stealing an icon or the other side by actually caring what one dimwitt wants to pitch a fit about.

Personally, I don't think [livejournal.com profile] kyburg should've caved. She should've told the bitch to fuck off and continued on her life. It's not only "just an icon" but the icon is an image done by an artist that is neither [livejournal.com profile] kyburg nor little miss no-life.

If someone wants to rip off original work, then I understand. Otherwise, bleh.

Have fun deleting my comment, no doubt that'll happen.

You gotta wonder who did the stealing here. Maybe you guys have it all backwards, ever consider that?

You wanna get technical, whoever scanned it stole it from Takahashi, any 'theft' that goes on after that is kinda pointless if you ask me.

This isn't about the scan, this is about the icon; if I were to get technical about the scan, I would be quite off topic. And I could go on for hours in a debate that few tend to win against about uses of scans, thefts, etc therein - I think we can all save some energy and not focus on that triviality.

There is still a matter of profession and personal pride that goes into icons. Rather than looking at it from the accused standpoint, try on both pairs of shoes to see the entire situation. That's my whole point here - don't mistake it for taking sides when I don't really have one.

Actually, IMO, Icons are made for sharing, but I'm not trying to argue with you here, I only meant that In My Opinion, unless the image Icon is handdrawn or photographed by you personally, it's not really 'your' property.

I can understand the hurt pride if two people in the same communities used the same icon, cause it'd get confusing as to who is who, however, the people in question aren't in the same communities, so it's really not worth arguing and proving and insisting that an Icon of a popular Comic Character *belongs* to you just because you scanned and cropped it. If you'd written anything or animated it at all, then yeah, it becomes yours.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that other-than-personalized icons, icons are for sharing, ala

http://www.livejournal.com/community/iamsexiamwrong/

I argue the whole intellectual property debate quite a bit elsewhere as I am an Anime Music Video creator and I dabble in the creation of my own 'art' out of somebody else's work, so I can understand both sides to a certain extent.

To those who take a lot of time and effort to make well edited videos with rapid and appropriate cuts to the music or lyrics, there is a certain level of professional pride that they feel that those who just simply lay a music track to two or three scenes of animation shouldn't take. Those who personalize the videos by putting their own spin on the animation they take from are deservedly proud of their achievements. Somebody who takes a fight scene or two and sets it to their favorite music shouldn't be.

Likewise in Icons. IMPO

Unfortunately, this is why people who make their own icons have to often put their names on them to keep morons with no consideration like these from taking them.

Taking and distributing an icon that was in a free icon community is one thing. Just TAKING someone's icon from their journal and thinking you can use it is quite another. Icons are a way for people to express themselves visually in a world of text, and add some uniqueness to their journal. Something that apparently these folks don't get at all.

It's just common custosy. I fail to see what is so hard for you people (luminamon aside) to understand about that. It's sad when people think just because you put something out there for them to see, it entitles them to take.

I bet you listen to MP3s.

See my Point above. Arguing that an Icon that is nothing but an unmodified image of a popular Comic Book Character BELONGS to any one person(Other than the Comic Book Creator) is ignorant.

Besides, a> I've seen the Icon in question several times in other journals. b> Timestamping something is hardly conclusive proof that you had something first. c> This is the Internet. Adapt or become irrelevant. Or more accurately, Suck it up and Drive on.

That of course assuming that the icon was stolen in the first place. [livejournal.com profile] kyburg has been using this one for quite some time before Sept. 2002 that [livejournal.com profile] seifergrrl claims to have 'created' this original icon.

And if it were a .gif or something that was truly unique, I'd agree. If I saw something like that on LJ, I would ask before using any icon. If the creator says no, then I don't. That is common courtesy.

I'm not afraid of posting the opposing viewpoints. One of [livejournal.com profile] kuburg's 400+ friends already took the icon in question and altered it and cleaned it up so as to avoid further confusion by [livejournal.com profile] seifergrrl.

My question is why is her world so fragile that she has to pursue action on an icon she spent a "whole" 5 minutes on...

I don't care if someone takes one of my icons... And I spent a bit more than 5 minutes creating them from my own scans. What's the big deal?

I take a stance similar to the Japanese mangaka community's stance on doujinshi.

If someone likes my artwork enough to use it for themselves, I'm flattered.

But you know, considering that [livejournal.com profile] kyburg has been using that icon since before Sept 2002, I really just think [livejournal.com profile] seifergrrl really needs to get her head out of her ass and get a life.

She calls herself an "artist", but I think the proper term is "asshat".

I think one of the most telling points about the whole theft thing is that this is the first time I've ever heard of this journaler, let alone seen the whole icon set she claims I picked and choosed from.

*rolls eyes* Whatever.
