Matrix Revolutions
Mar. 4th, 2004 11:20 pmBorrowed a copy from a friend at work and took a look at it.
I can understand how some folks wanted to see the machines be destroyed and everyone live happily ever after, but if you saw the Ani-Matrix, then you knew the final chapter wouldn't have a nice, neat ending.
Picking up where Reloaded ended, Neo's consciousness is lost. We now know where and after he meets up with the Oracle, we find out why. Smith had been absorbing the capabilities of the people and programs he merged with. Thus, Smith wants to merge with the Oracle in the worst way. Smith had become a virus and it seems he rather enjoyed that role.
It is interesting that Neo only gains full control of his abilities after he is blinded by Smith in the real world. The chance to see what was above the clouds was an interesting touch because it showed that the damage done to the atmosphere could be reversed in time. However, it would take the combined efforts of man and machine to make that happen.
Neo made a choice to be infected by Smith and allow himself to be a conduit for the machines to take Smith out. In exchange, Neo bought the lives of everyone left in Zion. With Trinity dead, he really had nothing to hold himslef back so it was solid writing and made good sense.
The way they chose to end it was intentional. The future is unwritten and choices will need to be made on both sides. Some would remain in the Matrix while those who wanted out would be allowed to leave. Not a perfect ending, but seeing how badly the Earth had faired in the last 600 years, it will take some time to make the place habitable for a sizeable population.
Those are my impressions of the movie anyways. I rather liked it. I'll have to get a copy for myself later on.
